Is weight loss surgery the best thing?

I have talked to many people and friends that have gotten weight loss surgery done. Most of my friends have gotten the sleeve done and I know my aunt an uncle years ago back in the late 80’s or early 90’s (I can not remember) got their stomachs stapled through surgery, lost the weight (mostly) and then gained it back. If I am going to decide to do this I do not want to shell out a 4,000 dollar co-pay from my insurance just for it not to work.

Now what I am about to write about does not apply to people who truly do need the surgery and cannot do it on their own. For example if people have a thyroid problem then yes it is a lot harder to lose weight and in some cases with those problems makes them gain weight. I am sure there are other physical challenges and reasons why, for some people, surgery maybe their only option.

For the rest of us, and yes I do mean us with me included need to get up off our butts and stop being lazy. Surgery is not a crutch of a fix, a quick fix, nor a fix all to patch up laziness which could simply be fixed by changing your diet. I pushed myself to go to the gym twice this week after work. Monday and yesterday I went and did my cardio on Monday and walked on the treadmill on Tuesday. But, I have been working hard for the past two weeks or so. I have lost ten pounds. My family and friends keep telling me that surgery will be the best thing for me, will be a good idea, and the famous “you SHOULD do it” reason! It’s now becoming like a cult/bandwagon thing and I do not know what scares me more is that so many people need/do it or that it looks like a fad/cult culture thing. Not only that, but there is a high rate of people gaining their weight back and/or have many complications. Every body’s body is different, but why put yourself through that and waste time, money, and energy? Plus when you lose weight that fast you’re going to have a lot of hanging loose skin. If you go to the gym and tone up with weights you will still have sagging skin, but not as bad. Then you will have to pay for surgery to get that removed and tucked in. If you tell your insurance it’s not for cosmetic reasons and trust me if you got weight loss surgery at 400 lbs. + there are tons of reasons why it is bad to leave it. Your skin could chaff, there could be bacteria getting in there, and all sorts of things. So that would be another high co-pay of whatever your insurance tells you once you’ve convinced them it is not cosmetic, but actual life saving loose skin removal. I just want to do a one time co-pay for loose skin removal not for both weight loss surgery and that.

I hate doctors and the thought of my stomach being cut into and drastically doing a force change in my life does not sound appealing. My doctor when I spoke with him said I would be perfect candidate. I am all for changing my diet and making smarter choices, but when I was speaking with one of my friends who had gotten the surgery and she lost almost 100 pounds with her surgery (she did the sleeve too) and told me she now cannot eat very much, but she cannot drink any liquids a half an hour before she eats and she has to wait a half an hour after she eats. That is not normal to me. Doctors and health professionals tell you to drink a glass of water before meals so that you’ll fill up more and become full faster. There are other things that do not agree with me that you have to do after surgery. I know I can do this on my own if I stop being lazy and take control of my life. No more stop and go diet and exercise routines because this should be a change of life for me. This should be my new lifestyle and change is apart of life.

Summer Gym Boot Camp Plans

My running partner and I have decided that things are really busy right now so we are trying to do our own thing. But, starting in June we are going to the gym in the mornings five days a week then do our running on Saturday mornings. If it is even too hot on Saturday early mornings then we will just head for the gym again. I’m putting myself on a better diet. I am also replacing my favorite staple of mashed potatoes with mashed cauliflower to cut down on the carbs. I got to get ready for that half marathon next year in September.

I would also like to apologize for not blogging more frequently like I have. I do not want my blog to be solely about my health journey, but other things like my other hobbies. I want to review films, books I have finished reading, and maybe game reviews. I could also talk about other things as well and maybe get more into cooking so I can update my recipe tab on here. I will be able to write more these coming summer months. 🙂

C25K II: Week 1 – Day 1

So then this happened…

My running partner and I started our second run through the app ( pun intended. XD ) on Saturday morning (4-15-2017) at the crack of dawn. This was done for a couple of reasons and one of those reasons was we could not get our schedules in sync. Our schedules were out of sync because I had to start going to the gym because of the hot weather and she was not a gym person. But, she surprised me and joined my gym so we can do our workouts in the gym. The second reason was I did not know how to restart the app and I kept forgetting where I was at. She showed me Saturday morning and now we can re-do it and keep training for the half marathon in September 2018.

C25K-R2: Week 1 – Day 3

I ran this Saturday despite me having a blister underneath my right pinky toe. When I worked out on last Wednesday I tried to take it easy. It is getting better to say the least and on Saturday one of the “run” intervals I actually RAN for twenty seconds and it felt good. I am getting there I guess and then there was talk with my running partner to go to Cedar City, Utah next fall of 2018. Why is that? For a half marathon and then I questioned how long that was, but I should of known it would be 13.1 miles. I have the marathon miles memorized as 26.2 so if it is half because it is a half marathon…eh you get the picture. Now I am training for that half marathon. This gives me at least a year and half to train even if I end up walking half or all of it…to walk half a marathon would be an accomplishment for me.

Raw Fitness Diet

So my brother did the 21 day Raw Fitness Challenge where you pay a crap load of money and if you lose the weight you get it back. He wanted me to try it, but I tried to tell him I do not have the money. Then he says you will get it back and next to what I say is I do not have the money to fork over now. The problem is…or at least there are two problems here why I can not do this challenge. One, too expensive and two what if I do not drop the weight in the allotted time? Because as a woman your weight can fluctuate and mine does and I do not know…

I am not afraid of trying knew things and I can probably debunk my second reason, but I can not take apart the first one. My brother says the money is mostly for the workouts. Well, I have my own routines and stuff and I think if I tried the workouts in their gyms I would die. If I only had 50-80 pounds to lose then sure I would go for it.

I also really feel all these fancy and/or fad diets, diet products, shakes, and pills are created by people so they can get rich off of people’s pain and suffering.

The Doctor Visit

I went to see my doctor yesterday and I was more upset yesterday than today. This is because I learned that all my training I did for eight weeks felt like it was for nothing. My doctor was great and all, but I was disappointed at my body because apparently my AC1’s did not budge. They did not budge one bit to my rising feelings of chagrin. My AC1’s are 8.2 and I was not expecting to get back to the seven’s or anything, but at least for it to move one point. The doctor discussed with me about eating right going along with the exercise. I have to change my diet of what I eat. Exercise is only 10% of a healthy life and when trying to lose weight. While, eating is the other 90% is what my doctor was telling me about.

So, we talked about a lot of things and a lot of issues and my mood swings. I’m not going to divulge into the whole enchilada, but when your sugar does a roller coaster of highs and lows so does your moods. There is something else I got diagnosed with (nothing life threatening and I am not dying) and it contributes to that and a few other things. I guess I got a double whammy here and I am still processing it and thinking of a strategy for battle so to speak. I am not a spring chicken anymore, but I am not elderly or old and so I guess I can not do a lot of physical activity and eat whatever. Teens can do this and not change their diet and lose weight and sometimes young adults can do this. I have to re-chart my whole exercise routine and come up with a newer plan.

The Gym or not the Gym?

I hate gyms for a few reasons, but I can over look most of those reasons. I always have to quit a gym because one hand does not know what the other hand is doing when it concerns money and payment issues. I did not think moving was a big deal or when my bank card changed. The computers are having issues and my only options are to cancel or get it switched over to my home gym where I live now. I would have gotten this problem fixed by now, but I am so busy to try and head over to my old gym is a pain. The manager of the place is only there at certain times where either I am working or busy with something else that is either equally important or more important. Also, when I talk to one of the employees and they write a note down for the manager to get back to me they never do. Trying to find the gym manager is like trying to locate the Ark of the Covenant at this point. =/

I’m debating cancelling my gym membership for a couple of reasons.

  1. It is now a hassle to try and get the computer to automatically take my payment
  2. I have been mostly doing my own thing for exercise instead of the gym. i.e. C25K app
  3. Germs (I have been over riding that fear when I was actively going.)
  4. Muscle headed big guys on steroids bullying me with their big truck telling me where to park because apparently they need a lot of space with a red carpet to get in and out of their vehicle and they think they own the whole parking lot. (this happened once)
  5. I would rather not deal with people, but you do what you gotta do.
  6. It is hard to do the C25K app on the treadmill. It is doable, but it is difficult.
  7. DDR (Dance Dance Revolution)
  8. Wii Fit and Wii Fit U

Reasons to keep the gym membership

  1. Ellie (I love the elliptical machines)
  2. I can bring a friend as many times as I want and the gym membership is like a twofer with gym benefits attached.
  3. I can exercise safely without being in the heat.
  4. Ummm….
  5. Yeeeaaaaaah….I dunno…

C25K: Week 7 – Day 1 and Dance Class

Yes, this was yesterday instead of Tuesday because now I am a day off because of that rainy Saturday. This training session was slightly better, but that is only because I think I paced myself in the beginning instead going for it at high octane speed. I am feeling under the weather for today for personal reasons…you know…female issues. I want to still go to my dance class tonight, but at the same time I just do not want to go. When I am in this mode I just want to drink a lot of water, eat chocolate, and sleep until the cows come home. For some reason though the craving of chocolate goes away the more protein I pack in. This may not work for everyone, but when you are training and on a diet then it is imperative that you do not ruin it with chocolate cravings. Another thing that works for the sweet tooth is fruit, but being diabetic I have to be careful with that so I try to balance fruit and protein. I wonder what other things could work? Because if I eat too much chicken or fish I think I’ll be sick. The only good thing about this time is most times I am not hungry and I actually get nauseous and sometimes dizziness accompanies it, but that is with the worse case scenarios that may occur. I usually give in to all the cravings and eat whatever. I do not want to do that though if I am trying to live healthier. I will figure this out eventually.

C25K: Week 6 – Day 2

Yesterday’s workout seemed to just take forever, which made my muscles more tired. It was a five minute warm up walk, then ten minutes for running, three minutes for walking, and then finally ten minutes for running again. Oh and then there is the five minute cool down where I just keep walking, but at a slower pace. My muscles, feet, and sides were paining me. I will reiterate and say that my Saturday runs I enjoy more and it is not as bad. My running partner said it would have gone by faster if I remembered my earbuds for my phone for music. She is right in a way and then I am not looking at my phone constantly to see the countdown of each section. But, the thing is I either forget my Fit Bit or I forget my earbuds and I have to have my steps count.

Tonight I go to my dance class and work on my belly dancing which shapes my stomach. It is raining outside pretty hard. It is a rare sight out in the desert especially in the middle of nowhere, so when it rains it floods, and when it floods no one can get anywhere. Also, there is this thing about people who live in the desert do not know how to drive in the rain let alone if it floods. Hopefully the weather is not too bad so I can get to my class.

C25K: Week 6 – Day 1

I would like to contribute the notion that yesterday’s run was difficult even though for some reason it was almost like the runs at the end of week four, but more like the beginning of week five. I think the main difference is that it is getting warmer earlier in the year. It is not enough to get out the shorts and short sleeved shirts, but when you are running outside or exercising outside then yes, the temperature makes all the difference especially when you live out in the middle of nowhere in the desert. This time my legs were really hurting and I still had to do the grocery shopping afterwards.

When I got home I ate dinner and then twenty minutes there after I passed out literally on my bed around seven and slept until two in the morning. I stayed away for about ten to fifteen minutes before passing out again asleep until ten minutes before my alarm wakes me up at five the next morning.

With that being said, I think my exercise routine is going well and I would like to do a video blog on YouTube. But, I am not sure it will be received well because even this website is still in its baby stage. Mostly if I do blog on YouTube it will be for any hiking adventures or photos and stuff like that. The reason for that is because I can not afford more bandwidth or GB or whatever it is called to hold everything and keep it all up on the site. I know I have 8 GB worth for starters, but as all of us tech people know is that can fill up fast. I hope that makes sense. If money and bandwidth were not an issue I would post videos and pictures directly to the website.

I hope to go on some hiking adventures soon. I do not know when I can make a trip out to some easy going hiking spots, because you have to start out easy and become more physically fit before taking on bigger hiking trails. I am actually excited thinking about it.
